Rundgren headed for the arenas
Todd Rundgren has confirmed his plan of unleashing an “Arena Rock” album sometime this year. During his short stint through the midwest he offered some new tidbits about his upcoming album in a couple new interviews. Rundgren is quoted in the Toronto Star saying that the album will consist of “big, fat guitar hooks and singalong choruses, like the songs Boston and Journey and Foreigner used to play – classic arena rock“. He goes on to say in an interview with billboard.com: “It’s… essentially the kind of music that works well in an arena. Everything has to be very deliberate and there’s often a lot of air in it to allow it to spread out and fill the space.” In the same article, Rundgren also mentioned that the New Cars was a bit of a bad idea and that he won’t be involved in the project in the forseeable future – “We couldn’t get the rights to use the name the Cars, and the New Cars just confused everybody. We didn’t want to have to start all over again. And I’ve got my own music and my own audience; I had no reason to start trying to begin a new career with another band.”
I personally can’t wait for the new record and hope that Rundgren actually does end up in arenas across the country performing these larger than life songs.
as a taste of things to come, let’s take a moment and enjoy some old arena rock favorites…
[Note: the following are downloadable via mediafire]
Def Leppard: Rock of Ages – C’mon, rise up gather round, rock this place to the ground, burn it up, let’s go for broke, watch the night go up in smoke
Journey: Only the Young – Only the young can say, they’re free to fly away, sharing the same desires, burnin’ like wildfire
Asia: Don’t Cry – So leave it all behind you, it took so long to find you, I know that we can last forever, ever and more
Boston: More Than a Feeling – I looked out this morning and the sun was gone, turned on some music to start my day, I lost myself in a familiar song, I closed my eyes and I slipped away
..and say so long to The New Cars: Not Tonight – So put me in your Blackberry and I’ll take your E-mail and we’ll meet when the time is right but not tonight
