visit with a friend in Cali

I recently made a trip out west to California to visit an old friend of mine named Matt who had been going through some rough times. Matt’s a struggling songwriter/musician who has been trying to land a record deal out in L.A. for as long as I’ve known him. It hasn’t been easy for him. He’s been in and out of numerous bands and has had a roller coaster ride of highs and lows these last couple years. Like your stereotypical VH1’s Behind the Music plotline, Matt’s main problem has been his unfortunate tendency to abuse drugs. It’s pretty much a vicious cycle of getting clean, making progress with his musical career, back-sliding in old habits again and so on and so on. Right before I made my visit, he had just finished a stint at a Drug Rehab facility out in Malibu. It’s an exclusive facility on a secluded estate where you get top notch one on one treatment. I was very surprised to hear that he was able to afford such a luxurious place and he mentioned that an A&R rep for an up and coming record label made all the arrangements. It turns out, the record exec. is interested in putting together a three song demo with Matt but wanted to help him get clean before hitting the studio. I was so happy to final see him catch a break in his musical career and on top of it all, to see him clean and sober. I’m truly glad that Matt had the opportunity to get treated for his addiction. and now he’s physically and mentally ready to take on the challenge of creating some spectacular demos that may actually land him a record contract. keep your fingers crossed.
