keep your identity safe
well, it was bound to happen, I guess. Lifelock received some bad press this past week. It appears the service isn’t as foolproof as CEO Todd Davis had hoped. apparently Todd Davis’ identity was indeed stolen. it has been reported that various criminals used the advertised social security number to apply for driver’s licenses in Davis’ name. It seems that sort of crime is hard to detect since the application process doesn’t go through any of the three credit bureaus that lifelock monitors. It’s a bit frightening to hear that a whopping 36 percent of registered complaints with the Federal Trade Commission is indeed related to identity theft (as reported by ConsumerAffairs.com). and as we can see from the reported incident last week, Lifelock isn’t the total solution in preventing identity theft but it’s still an effective service to use especially when you view it as an extra layer of security. You just need to keep in mind that nothing in this day and age is foolproof. we all need to take proactive measures to keep our personal information from falling into the wrong hands. Lifelock can indeed make things a bit easier by monitoring credit bureaus and such but that doesn’t mean that you can lie down on your job. it’s your identity and you need to do all that it takes to keep it as such. be sure to shred all your personal documents before they hit the trash, never carry around your social security card and last but not least, don’t ever give your bank account number to someone who claims in an email that you can get a piece of a huge inheritance somewhere overseas. when it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!!
