random tidbits for 26Jun08

June 26, 2008

- the first installment of the Rescue Me minisodes was a bust. the humor felt forced. I’m beginning to think that Denis Leary and company won’t be able to stop this boat from sinking. it’s sad. especially since the first two seasons of the series were so good!

- watched Definitely, Maybe last night. man, can a movie get any more un-original? the writers stole so many chick-flick elements from other more successful movies, I’m surprised they weren’t sued. I should have known just from the lame title. It was dissappointing to watch especially with such a likable cast (Ryan Reynolds, Elizabeth Banks and Isla Fisher).

- voting for the Blogger’s Choice Awards is winding down. so if you haven’t already, be sure to cast a vote for RetroBlog. thanks!

- upcoming music reviews I’m working on: new releases by Aimee Mann, Julianne Hough, Chicago, Martha Wainright, Mate of State and Sam Phillips. I’m not sure when I’ll get to them all but rest assure, they are in the works.

- I’m tinkering with another new site. I might be just spreading myself a little thin with all these various sites across the net. we’ll see how this goes. man, how many more websites do I really need??? I mean, really? Scarlett Johansson – Anywhere I Lay My Head

June 24, 2008

you know, I have to give Scarlett Johansson credit. she could have taken the easy route and released some sort of vanity album with a slick pop producer similar to what countless other young celebs have done in the past. with her pull in the industry, she could have easily gotten the top pop/R&B producers to get her radio-ready songs for her to be auto-tuned on top of. instead, she got together with TV On the Radio’s Dave Sitek to record an album of Tom Waits covers titled Anywhere I Lay My Head. So, it’s great to see that she’s not doing this as a promotional tool to further own celebrity status but you have to wonder what the point of all this is then. I don’t think this album appeals to the majority of Tom Waits fans. and let’s just say that Johansson’s voice wouldn’t get her past the first round of American Idol auditions. But I like Sitek’s approach here surrounding Johansson with broad sonic soundscapes saturated with reverb. with the textured instrumental arrangements, Johansson’s vocals aren’t necessarily the focal point which is wise since she’s obviously got a limited vocal range. Sitek brought in musicians like Nick Zinner, David Bowie, Jaleel Bunton and Tunde Adebimpe to help create layers of sound reminiscent of Brian Eno and Phil Spector. I’m not sure if I’ll be listening to this disc six months from now but I have to say that it’s an interesting concept and a definite stand-out among other projects done by celebrities turned wanna-be singers. highlights include: Falling Down, Fanning Street and I Don’t Want to Grow Up.

Teeth lacks bite!

June 20, 2008

I don’t think the director or writer knew where to take the story. the film, Teeth, wasn’t successful because the director essentially sat on the fence with it. he could have went with a black-comedy or full tilt horror movie or maybe a even a heartfelt teen-angst drama. but the resulting movie is neither here or there. It just seemed director Mitchell Lichtensen simply had a checklist of items he wanted on-screen:

bloody cut off penis – check!
visit with perverted gyno – check!
evil step-brother – check!
brain-washed christians saving themselves for marriage – check!

If you haven’t seen the movie, it’s centers around a teenaged girl who ends up learning that the ancient myth of vagina dentata is actually real. the story had lots of potential but nothing noteworthy comes out of it. and the viewpoint is a bit skewed against men as well as the christian “true love waits” conservatives.
ultimately it’s a waste of talent and a waste of time. I personally give it a “thumbs down”.

domain name scorecard

June 19, 2008

as more and more people rely on the internet for information and entertainment, securing the right domain name for your website has become extremely important. if you’ve got a certain brand name or if you want to market your own rock band, it’s simply a no-brainer getting the name registered online. but is that all there is? Network Solutions has an easy three step process in helping website owners determine if they’re doing all they can in securing their brand online. It’s called the domain name scorecard and the online application can help you find ways to improve your web presence. one easy way to improve your domain name score is to register your domain name in all the various web extensions like .com, .net, .org, .biz and .us. when you have all the extensions covered, web surfers who remember your brand name but not your web extension can still reach you quickly and easily no matter what extension they type in with your domain name. another way to optimize traffic to your site is to cover some obvious mispellings of your brand. if your brand name can easily be misspelled, registering those misspelled domains can help redirect those surfers back to the correct website. it’s good insurance to register those sites ahead of time since it’s a tried and true method that other savvy webmasters can do to redirect traffic to a competing website. to learn more about your domain name score, head over to Network Solutions today.

Rescue Me minisodes

June 19, 2008

rescue me from that crappy fourth season!!Finally Peter Tolan admits that the last season of Rescue Me wasn’t all that great. I was beginning to think I lost my senses thinking that one of my favorite TV shows was going down the crapper. Tolan is quoted in USA Today saying “the story choices we made took us away from our main guys. It was sort of treading water.” (referring to the subpar fourth season.)

the fifth season won’t being airing until April 2009 on FX so Denis Leary and Tolan decided to film some “minisodes” to keep viewers interested in the series during the extended break. look for the 5 minute clips on FX (as well as youtube, Hulu and the FX website) beginning the week of June 24th.

Freaks and Geeks on DVD

June 17, 2008

I’ve been on a Freaks and Geeks kick these last few weeks. I’m not sure why especially since I wasn’t that taken by the show back when it first aired on NBC. but it’s now probably in my top ten of all time favorite TV shows. thank goodness Shout Factory released the complete series on DVD for us late-comers. apparently it’s a licensing nightmare (not to mention expensive) to release a series like this on DVD because of all the music featured in each episode. (Thanks Shout Factory!)

and man, the “I’m with the Band” episode is just simply SPOT on! kudos to Judd Apatow, Paul Feig and the rest of the Freaks and Geeks team. Anyone who’s been involved with a band growing up can relate to this episode. the episode captured some great moments from Nick’s (Jason Segel) frustration with his band’s lack of motivation down to Nick’s heart-breaking realization that he’ll never make it as a professional drummer. oh and the contrast between what’s being heard in Nick’s headphones compared to how Nick actually sounds playing along to Rush is just pure genius! I can just go on and on about this episode along with the whole series but I’ll spare you the verbal diarrhea.

and what can I say about lovely Linda Cardellini. she was absolutely perfect for the role as Lindsay Weir.

..OK, OK, I’ll admit it. ..this is just an excuse to post some photos of Linda…
Linda Cardellini - Freak or Geek?
she sure doesn’t look like a geek! :P

Father's Day

June 14, 2008

I cringe whenever my kids tell me I’m the greatest dad. because deep down I know I’m far from it. I mean, I appreciate the fact that my kids love me the way that I am but I know I’m deeply flawed. I’m trying very hard to be the greatest dad but I always fail to reach that standard. I’m a work in progress. I’m learning as I go. hopefully, someday, I will be a great dad. hopefully, SOON. before my kids are fully grown!!!

for all the dads out there – Happy Father’s Day.

Give me your hand I’d like to shake it
I want to show you I’m your friend.
You’ll understand if I can make it clear
its all that matters in the end.
Put it there if it weighs a ton,
that’s what the father said to his younger son.
I don’t care if it weighs a ton,
as long as you and I are here, put it there.
long as you and I are here, put it there.

If there’s a fight I’d like to fix it,
I hate to see things go so wrong.
the darkest night and all it’s mixed emotions,
is getting lighter sing along..

- Put It There by Paul McCartney
