It’s obvious that some holiday shoppers need to take a step back and re-evaluate what’s most important in their lives. I mean, come on, all this chaos and commotion over some low priced electronics? The tragic deaths on black friday at the Wal-Mart in NY and a Toys-R-Us in California is just madness!! Saving a couple bucks on some products you don’t really need, just ain’t worth it people!!
I recently purchased my parents a brand new 42″ plasma HDTV. It was pretty exciting pulling the TV out of the box and going through all the initial settings and channel preferences. Unfortunately, it was a bit underwhelming watching standard definition broadcasts on their basic cable connection. It’s like having an expensive surround sound audiophile system and only playing mono AM-talk radio through it. Most folks are going through this dilemma right now with their recently purchased HDTV in their family rooms. What we all need to do is unleash the power of those brand new plasmas and LCDs by subscribing to the Ultimate Bundle through Charter Communications. With the Ultimate Bundle, you get clear, high resolution HD channels along with 10Mbps high speed internet service, digital phone service plus premium channels like Showtime, HBO and Cinemax. Let’s face it, watching standard definition television through a HDTV isn’t that thrilling. High Definition programming is a must for these new TVs and Charter Communications can get you those channels for less. They’re currently running a black friday/Cyber-Monday deal that reduces the price of the Ultimate Bundle service to $165.97 a month. It’s the best deal around especially considering that you also get a $250 gift card and a chance to win 1 of 45 XBox 360 game consoles. Be sure to act fast because the offer ends December 5th.
I’m zeroing in on a HDTV this holiday season. Our old conventional tube TV is on its last leg. It’s not that old but the TV has gotten so dim that we can’t see any images during scenes set in the dark or at night. We’ve got the brightness level at the highest setting and we still can’t make out what’s happening during most of “Batman Begins” since the bulk of the movie is primarily in the dark. I’m looking for an LCD larger than 46″ with 1080p resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate and an upscaler that can produce good standard definition images. I’ve been reading that a lot of models that look great in high def, don’t have quality converters to properly display standard definition programming. And since I still have standard cable, finding a good HDTV with good SD capabilities is a must in my book. I’m still doing the research and haven’t found a clear answer to all this. is the general rule of thumb to go for a panasonic or sony? …and who knows, maybe a low price will just trump over all these issues anyway. expect a future post on this as I investigate this some more…
I thought I’d share an interesting article that breaks down the earning potential for bloggers utilizing Dragon Naturally Speaking with a blog advertising service called PayPerPost. I’ve been with PayPerPost for a long while now and I can see how using a speech recognition software would reduce the amount of time it take to type of my posts which, in turn, could lead to an increase in earnings. Fellow blogger, Brett Bumeter also posted a youtube video that explains just how easy it is to translate audio from a portable voice recording device into text using Dragon Naturally Speaking with minimal fuss or customization.
excerpt from the whitepaper analysis:
This is an excerpt from a white paper discussing how bloggers can earn more money through several different monetization and freelance writing services. It shows that bloggers that utilize Dragon Naturally Speaking can earn more money through these various services and how fast these extra earnings will pay for the software itself.
Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 Blogger Break Even Analysis with High PayPerPost Earnings
In this article I’m going to walk you through another scenario focusing on how much extra you could earn if you wrote for PayPerPost.com. Now at PayPerPost.com, the amount of money that you earn for your writing is not paid on a per word basis.
PayPerPost.com offers up opportunities, they call them opportunities, but you can also think of them as piecework or a job, and these “opportunities” typically have a minimum word count. The minimum word count is typically 200 words for your average article. In general the average article at PayPerPost on a high earning blog pays about $28. Sometimes they pay a little less, and sometimes they pay a little bit more.
Now if you are paid $28.00 to write a 200 word article, which breaks down to about 14 cents per word. That is about 200 times more than what you can make at textbroker.com. I mentioned that only for comparison purposes, because PayPerPost.com limits you to writing three articles per blog per day. That means that you can’t write there all day long for your single blog. (If you have additional blogs, you might be able to write additional articles on those other blogs.)
But if we assume, just to have a comparison to our textbroker.com example, if we assume that you could type articles at PayPerPost for fifty minutes straight, earning 14 cents per word, and you could type 35 words per minute, and then you could earn a $245 dollars per hour at PayPerPost. Now obviously, there’s not that much work there, but this does point to the rate at which you can earn things with the work that is available. That $245 would be the earnings you could make from about 8.8 Opportunities at $28 per Opportunity. So bear with me with this example.
So what can faster typing skills do to help you earn more money and PayPerPost?
Well if you could type at 150 words per minute with Dragon NaturallySpeaking, and you currently type at 35 words per minute, then you could earn about $805 per hour more!
Reminder – This would assume that you could type articles nonstop at a hundred and fifty words per minute for fifty minutes. For most of us, that doesn’t mean a whole lot.
But to put this in better perspective, if you earned $245 from writing about nine articles, and those articles were each 200 words long, then you would have written a total of 1800 words.
• 1800 words can be typed and 50 minutes at 35 words per minute
• 1800 words can be typed in 12 minutes at 150 words per minute
Dragon NaturallySpeaking can essentially save you 38 minutes when you write nine articles.
Now with those additional thirty-eight minutes, you can spend more time:
• promoting your blog,
• networking with people,
• researching other projects,
• taking on other work from other networks
• building up a new blog to command $28 per article!
You can pocket your $245 from twelve minutes worth of work. You can then spend the rest of that hour, working to ensure that the blog you publish those on performs very well. But the point is this, Dragon NaturallySpeaking can save you so much time, that it will pay for itself very quickly.
Your average part-time blogger may easily afford to pay for Dragon NaturallySpeaking with the additional profits that they would earn from using Dragon NaturallySpeaking in less than 30 minutes worth of blogging.
Plus just think of all of the time, that you would now have to make yourself and your site even more successful!

I’ve been waiting for Lindsey Buckingham to release a proper follow up to 1992’s superb Out of the Cradle and he finally did it with the recently released Gift Of Screws. Yes, I know Buckingham made a “comeback” of sorts with Under the Skin in 2006 but the understated acoustic album didn’t really count in my book. To me, Buckingham’s solo outings are all about the “excess”- you know, the “going overboard” with song ideas and production techniques that he couldn’t find a place for under the “Fleetwood Mac” umbrella. His 2006 solo effort was more of an anomaly with its hushed-vocals and lack of hooks or strong melodies. But thankfully Buckingham’s signature “big hooks” are in full force on his new album. The one-two punch of the openers “Great Day” and “Time Precious Time” feature Buckingham’s unique style of fingerpicking. The stereo output that he gets from his custom Rick Turner model guitar sounds absolutely phenomenal. I DO have to mention though that beyond his amazing guitar playing on the first two songs, there’s not much else to take away from them. They’re essentially there to set things up for the third track, “Did You Miss Me” which *finally* kicks the album into gear. Tracks like “Did You Miss Me”, “Love Runs Deeper” and “Bel Air Rain” are great reminders of what a pop genius can do in four minutes. As an added bonus we get to hear the rock solid Fleetwood Mac rhythm-section (Mick Fleetwood and John McVie) on three tunes – “Wait For You”, “Gift of Screws” and “The Right Place to Fade”.
I love the uncertainty in the lyrics to “Underground” which is a dig at his record company (They heard fifteen seconds and that was enough, the idea was new but the business was tough, I think I might wander underground). And it’s interesting to point out that he didn’t end up going “underground” and is still with Reprise Records. The album ends strong with a nice strum-along tune titled “Treason” about moving forward from all the lies and deceit. Like most of Buckingham’s lyrics, the song is wide open for interpretation – it could be about a destructive relationship or the dynamics within Fleetwood Mac or a jab at George W. Bush. But with a title like “Treason”, I suppose it’s Buckingham’s take on Bush. In any case, the song works on all levels and a good strong finish to a solid effort.

I suppose legendary recording artists like Sir Paul McCartney have all painted themselves into a corner in a way, having to live up to their own legacy and produce new material that are required to resemble their past glories. That would explain why McCartney felt the need to release his latest album titled Electric Arguments under a different alias, “The Fireman”. As “The Fireman”, McCartney is essentially free to explore other musical realms and not be confined to the “three minute pop song”. Partnering up with producer Youth (U2, the Orb) like he did on previous Fireman albums, McCartney’s goal here is not to produce a mega-selling hit album. And that’s a good thing in my book. Sir Macca sounds looser and more excited than he has in years. In fact, it’s a bit of a shame he didn’t release it as a legitimate McCartney album because it’s probably the best I’ve heard from him since… Flowers in the Dirt. It’s definitely a huge step up from his last effort, Memory Almost Full. Without having to worry about chart positions or sales numbers, Sir Macca and Youth have put together a refreshing batch of songs. It’s interesting to note that the previous Fireman releases were explorations in instrumental electronica but this release brings things closer into pop territory with McCartney singing catchy hooks.
The album opens up with a strong, bluesy rocker titled “Nothing Too Much Just out of Sight”. I love the Led-Zepp like guitar riff and the odd time signature. Things change up quickly with a “RAM”-era sounding “Two Magpies” featuring sweet acoustics and Macca singing falsetto. The album continues on, shifting gears continuously, from straightforward pop (“Sing the Changes”, “Sun is Shining”) to trance/dance (“Lovers in a Dream”) to Floyd-ish psychedelia (“Lifelong Passion”). The last two tracks (“Universal Here, Everlasting Now”, “Don’t Stop Running”) are more trippy/space-y like the previous Fireman releases. I’m just amazed that McCartney and Youth were able to write and record the whole album in just thirteen days. And this is with Sir Macca playing all the instruments!! I can’t imagine any other singer/songwriter/musician working THAT fast.
Electric Arguments is a solid effort all around. It’s so great to see after all these years, Paul McCartney still got some surprises up his sleeve.

In a recent post, I mentioned about utilizing the layaway program at Kmart. It’s a smart option for those that don’t want to overburden themselves on their credit cards. Also, it keeps you honest. Just think about it. You pay a portion of the amount owed to the retailer every week until the item is fully paid for. And you won’t be able to take the item home until you do. It’s an effective way to keep you from going overboard with gifts this holiday season. Since you know you have to pay every item in full, it’ll make you keep your selected items to just the essentials. And as it turns out, the layaway option has become so popular that Kmart’s parent company, Sears has announced that they’ll also be providing the payment option as well. I don’t know about you but I’ll be taking advantage of the Sears Layaway program this holiday season. I like the flexible payment plan and the fact that I’m not adding to my credit card debt. I’m thinking of getting my dad the Craftsman NEXTEC combo tool set. My dad is always in his garage working on his projects so I thought this cordless tool set would be perfect for him. As for the kids, in addition to all the toys and games this holiday season, I’m probably going to get them some Zero Xposur hooded jackets since they’re constantly outgrowing their winter-wear. Oh and those Farberware cookware sets that Sears has would be perfect for my aunt who’s always complaining about not having quality cookware whenever she has us over for dinner. The layaway option is just another great reason to shop at Sears this holiday season. Head on over to your local Sears store today!
From deep within the depths of my vast music collection comes a new installment of The RetroBlog Music Vault. Today, I thought I’d feature an all time classic song from Todd Rundgren titled “Can We Still Be Friends”. Originally released back in 1978 on Rundgren’s Hermit of Mink Hollow album, the song went on to become one of his signature tunes (along with “Hello It’s Me”, “Bang on the Drum” and “I Saw the Light”). The song has been featured on a number of movies and TV shows including Vanilla Sky, Dumb and Dumber and Nip/Tuck. Over the years, the song has also been covered by a number of different artists which I’ll be covering here in the post.
1) Can We Still Be Friends by Robert Palmer
This is a straight ahead cover which was released a year after Rundgren’s original version. Palmer smoothed out the quirkiness of the original and made it a bit more radio friendly. also available via Amazon on The Very Best of the Island Years
2) Can We Still Be Friends by Rod Stewart
Rod Stewart recorded a version that seems to be modeled after Palmer’s rendition. Again, it’s pretty straight forward except for an extended vamp at the end. Frankly Stewart’s cover leaves me a bit cold. also available via Amazon on Camouflage
3) Can We Still Be Friends by Mandy Moore
Yes, laugh it up but honestly, I think Mandy Moore does a great version of this song. It’s probably my favorite of all the cover versions listed here. also available via Amazon on The Best of Mandy Moore
I don’t know about you but I’m intending to limit my spending on gifts this holiday season. It’s sad to say especially when you’ve got a large network of family and friends that you’ll be seeing during the holidays. But under the current economic climate, being a bit frugal isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It also helps when you know where to shop. And during this holiday shopping season, Kmart is fast becoming the “go-to” retailer for finding great gifts and saving money. They understand the consumer’s need to cut back this season and have recently responded by unveiling more than 25,000 gifts that can be had for under $25. This is an absolute boon for holiday shoppers especially when you consider all the great brands included in the holiday sale like Craftsman®, Celebrations by Radko™ and the Martha Stewart Everyday series. I recently scored big time with finding some Bakugan starter kits at our local Kmart. It’s a series of toys related to a popular television show that lil’ kids all over the nation are currently clamoring for. Most retailers are having a tough time keeping these toys in stock but luckily Kmart had some when I was out shopping last week. I’m pretty sure my kids will be pretty darn happy to see these Bakugan Brawlers on Christmas morning. So, be sure to head out to your local Kmart to find some quality gifts for under $25.
It’s unfortunate that the latest Hillsong Live release, This Is Our God has been stained by Michael Guglielmucci deceiving people into believing he had cancer. The CD turned out to be one of their stronger efforts in recent years. OK, admittedly, that’s not saying all that much since the last few Hillsong Live albums have been pretty lackluster. But with long time leader Darlene Zschech taking a less prominent role in the worship team, the line between “Hillsong Live” and “Hillsong United” has been blurred. What you hear now as “Hillsong Live” is pretty much what we’ve been hearing on “Hillsong United” albums – a straight-ahead, no-nonsense alt-rock approach to worship music. And there-in lies the problem. I’m not sure if it’s simply the limitations of the musicians in the band but the instrumental arrangements to every track are blandly similar. I can see that the songwriters have written some great material this time around but frustratingly, the band interprets the songs in the same fashion every single time. Frankly, they desperately need to find better musicians because the guitar player can’t play a decent lead to save his life. And the piano is relatively non-existent in the mix. So, what we end up here on the album is a wall of sound created by a whole bunch of guitars strumming basic chords for 70-plus minutes which is pretty tedious listening. And that’s a shame because some of these songs deserve better treatment. Once you get past the run-of-the-mill playing, you can find some mega-church filling anthems like “He is Lord”, “Your Name High”, “Stronger” and “You Are Here (the Same Power)”.
