Playstation 3 on layaway

November 8, 2008

Now that my oldest son is in middle school, my wife and I have been steadily increasing his level of responsibility around the house. We’ve noticed how the teachers at school are expecting their students to be less dependent on parents as well as teachers when completing assignments and projects. The kids should be able to determine by themselves how best to use their time and to be able to keep track of when things are due. It’s tough as a parent not to “baby” one’s kids but obviously we have to let them grow up. And so, with that in mind, I’ve been assigning my son household chores to do each week as well as giving him an allowance. As a matter of fact, he has saved up quite a bit over the year and he’s hoping to purchase a new Playstation 3 with the money he saved.
In order to teach him responsibility and to follow through with his decisions, we’ve allowed him to purchase the PS3 through the Kmart Lay-Away program. And now that he’s committed to purchasing the game system, he has to make a payment every two weeks for a total of eight weeks in order to complete the purchase. It seems to be a great way for my son to learn the value of money and what it takes to get something he really wants. I was surprised to learn that Kmart is the only national discount retailer that offers an easy-pay layaway option. It’s nice to know that Kmart makes this option available especially during this time of economic strain. I’m sure there are tons of families out there that would rather put some Christmas items on layaway than maxing out their credit cards this holiday season. Anyway, I’m actually looking forward to seeing my son bring that PS3 home. Not only does it play the latest and greatest video games but it can also be used as a High-Definition Blu-ray player. Hooking that 1080p resolution HDMI connection to my big screen plasma will definitely make our holidays a lot brighter.

  1. KMart tends to get overlooked by shoppers. But it’s always a great place to find bargains.

  2. speaking of which, DealNews just posted some cool electronic deals at kmart going on right now -

    Kmart added new items to its Black Friday Electronics Sale. Although not as strong as a typical Black Friday sale, it includes discounts on select electronics such as HDTVs, GPS units, digital cameras, and more. Some best bets:
    * Magnavox DVD Player & 4-Head Hi-Fi VCR Combo for $59.99 + $8 s&h
    * GE A735 7-Megapixel Digital Camera for $79.99 + $6 s&h
