Bruce Springsteen – Working On a Dream – Review

January 27, 2009

It’s a great week to be a Bruce Springsteen fan. Besides the release of his brand new album, Working on a Dream, fans will get a chance to see him play live during halftime at the Super Bowl on sunday. Springsteen is then set to begin his tour in April which will stretch through the summer. It’s too bad the album that he’ll be supporting on tour isn’t one of his stronger efforts. I suppose we all expect a lot out of Springsteen which may make the new album seem like a letdown. But come on Bruce, did you have to *borrow* the melody line from KISS’ “I Was Made for Lovin’ You” for the song “Outlaw Pete”? Bruce, you’re better than that! But indeed, the main melody line in “Outlaw Pete” was lifted straight out of KISS’ songbook. blech. Not a great way to kick off the album. Things get better on the next song “My Lucky Day” which is a straight ahead E Street rocker and the title track “Working On a Dream”. But things come to a screeching halt with “Queen of the Supermarket”. First of all, can you picture Bruce Springsteen pushing a cart at the local grocery store??? And the lyrics. oh, the lyrics. just plain awful:
I’m in love with the queen of the supermarket
As the evening sky turns blue
A dream awaits in aisle number two..

yikes. He can’t be serious???? Things improve with songs like “This Life” and “Kingdom of Days” but sadly none of these tracks will become a staple on future Springsteen setlists. Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s not all bad. the melodies are easy to digest and the words/stories are straighforward but we expect more than that from this legendary songwriter. we need something more to chew on than simple lines like “And when the sun comes out tomorrow it’ll be the start of a brand new day.” I guess we can think of this as “Springsteen-lite”. Thankfully as an added bonus, they’ve included “The Wrestler” from the movie of the same name. The acoustic track is very moving and outshines a lot of the fluff on the rest of the record.

RetroGrade : C+

personal favorites include: The Wrestler, My Lucky Day, Working on a Dream, Kingdom of Days

retroblog short takes for January

January 22, 2009

I was intending to finish off 2008 with a bunch of CD reviews here on retroblog but time just wasn’t on my side. I managed a “short takes” entry last month that included brief reviews for Charlie Haden, Brad Paisley and Jenny Lewis. And now I have a few more leftovers from 2008 for today’s “short takes” entry.

Girl TalkFeed the Animals
This was probably my favorite album of 2008. Over the years, I’ve heard a ton of mashups and a lot of the time the results ended up a little grating and harsh on the ears. But here, Gregg Gillis manages to make mashups a legitimate art form with a lot of creativity, musicality and a whole lot of fun. It’s an amazing accomplishment and the disc keeps me coming back for more. the CD is a *must have* in my book!

Yo Yo MaSongs of Joy & Peace
The most well known Cellist in the world attempts to bridge the classical world with pop in this holiday CD. It’s pleasant listening but a bit bland and non-descript at times. It’s just another one of those CDs you put on in the background and not pay a whole lot of attention to. The big names that are along for the ride on this album include Diana Krall, Alison Krauss, Chris Botti, Dave Brubeck and James Taylor.

..and speaking of James Taylor..
James taylorCovers
Here we find another legendary artist on autopilot. Taylor is simply “phoning it in” with an album full of unremarkable covers. The album works well as background music at the local coffee shop but it really doesn’t stand up on its own. I have to say that Taylor’s voice sounds great though after all these years but I’d much rather hear him sing new original music than stuff like “On Broadway” or “Hound Dog”.

play your music anywhere in the house!

January 21, 2009

Like a lot of people, I’ve got a ton of mp3s stored on my desktop computer in my home office. It’s my main computer that I use everyday for work as well as for blogging here on this site. But I also spend time in the bonus room upstairs to relax, lounge around, watch movies and play games. I have an older desktop system set up in there for the kids to use as well as for anyone else that needs internet access. Every so often I get the urge to put on some music but the problem is that most of my music is on the computer downstairs. Luckily, there’s a program that can easily solve this problem. Share Speaker Player allows a user to share songs across a network and play them on other computers. It essentially lets Multiple computers share a set of speakers. You simply install the program on the various computers you have at home and the software takes care of the hard stuff. The easy to use interface lets you see the computers on the home network and you simply select the computer that has the music you want to play and then select where you want to listen from. It also features a remote playlist so that you can quickly select the songs you’re in the mood for. There’s no need to worry about extra hardware or cables. You simply use your existing home network to listen to your music. Share Speaker Player makes it simple and easy to share your music. Try it out for free at ShareSpeaker.com.

2009 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees Announced

January 15, 2009

This year’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees have been announced. I don’t know about you but “Rock & Roll” doesn’t seem to be the correct label anymore. Especially with Madonna getting in last year and now RUN-DMC!!??!! “Pop” or simply “music” seem to fit better. But I suppose any change wouldn’t have the same “ring” to it as “Rock & Roll”. whatever. Anyway, Run-DMC, Metallica, Jeff Beck, Bobby Womack and Little Anthony and the Imperials will be inducted this year.

Still missing from the Hall of Fame : Todd Rundgren, Genesis, Rush, the Stooges, Yes, ELP, The Moody Blues and Alice Cooper. Definitely doesn’t seem fair.

Here’s the AP News Article:

Run-DMC, Metallica lead list of 2009 Rock Hall By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY
NEW YORK (AP) — Run-DMC once hailed themselves as the Kings of Rock, so it’s fitting that the pioneering rappers have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Run-DMC joins the heavy metal band Metallica, guitarist Jeff Beck, soul singer Bobby Womack and doo-wop group Little Anthony and the Imperials as this year’s inductee class.

Though Run-DMC wasn’t among the first rap acts, they were the first to achieve widespread mainstream success, and the first to notch a platinum album. The rapping duo of Joseph “Run” Simmons and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels — plus their DJ, the late Jam Master Jay — were rap’s first rock stars. They had hits with songs like “My Adiddas” and “It’s Tricky,” but had their greatest success when they remade Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” with the rock act for a groundbreaking collaboration.

In an interview Wednesday, McDaniels called their induction “inconceivable.”

“I’m a rap dude, I’m an MC from Hollis (a neighborhood in New York’s borough of Queens), just rockin’ the mic, and to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with the Beatles, and (Bob) Dylan, and the rock ‘n’ roll gods? It’s ridiculous! Ridiculous in a good way,” he said.

He also gave a nod to the predecessors who paved the way for the group’s success: “I share this nomination and the induction and the whole award with those cats, everyone from the Bronx and Harlem who started this.”

Jam Master Jay — whose real name was Jason Mizell — was shot to death in his recording studio in 2002. McDaniels doesn’t consider the induction bittersweet — “because Jay isn’t here to celebrate doesn’t mean he’s not partaking in this event” — but said he couldn’t see the duo performing during the April 4 induction ceremony in Cleveland without him.

“We can’t do it without Jay,” he said. “I want people to remember the last time they saw us together, the three of us.”

Like Run-DMC, Metallica made its debut 25 years ago with the seminal album “Kill ‘Em All,” and became pioneers in their genre, with their thrashing metal sound, led by the frenetic guitar play of James Hetfield and the drumming of Lars Ulrich. One of rock’s more enduring bands, the group has sold upwards of 60 million records in the United States alone, and are still one of music’s most successful acts: They are on a top-selling tour, their latest album, “Death Magnetic,” has sold more than a million copies and has also been nominated for Grammy awards.

Rockabilly singer Wanda Jackson got a nod for the early influence category, and the sidemen inductees are session musician Spooner Oldham and two of Elvis Presley’s musicians — drummer D.J. Fontana and bassist Bill Black.

MagNext Virtual

January 14, 2009

One of the Christmas gifts my son is still enjoying is the MagNext iCoaster building set. Usually, kids grow tired of toys and games in a matter of weeks, sometimes even days. But the iCoaster seems to have staying power. My son loves putting together different track configurations to see how the magnetic ball travels through the set up. As a parent, it’s always great to see a toy that stimulates the mind and helps kids utilize their problem solving skills. As a matter of fact, the company behind the iCoaster has recently opened up a virtual community built especially for kids called MagNext Virtual. It’s a free flash-based portal for kids to use to access some cool games including an iCoaster game. I had an opportunity to try it out just to make sure it was safe for my seven year old to use. And I have to say that I was very impressed with the virtual world MagNext has built and I’m pretty sure my child will be spending a lot of time on the site. You explore the world as a colored magnetic ball and you can visit various areas to play different games, challenge other gamers or modify the appearance of your avatar. The iCoaster game is basically a puzzle game where you have to find the correct missing pieces of the roller coaster track or risk having your magnetic ball fall off the track.

It’s great to see a toy manufacturer care enough to build an online world on their website for kids the world over to use for free. Plus, the games are good, clean fun with no violence or mayhem to worry about. The graphics are pleasing to the eye and since it’s flash-based, it should be accessible with any browser. If you have kids searching for new games to try, be sure to show them the fun and exciting world of MagNext Virtual.

McCartney on Howard Stern

January 14, 2009

As a Paul McCartney fan, I tend to hear the same ol’ stories from McCartney in his interviews over and over again. with questions like – “Do you miss John Lennon?”, “When will the Beatles reunite?”, or “What was it like, being in the Beatles?”, I’m always amazed at how Sir Paul continually keeps his composure when asked boring old questions like these. Obviously the interviewers are to blame and from the fan’s point of view, these interviews are simply wasted opportunities. That’s why I was glad to hear that McCartney went on the Howard Stern show this morning. Yes, Stern is known to be crude and disgusting but the guy has an amazing talent in disarming his guests and getting them to tell stuff they wouldn’t normally say otherwise. Plus, Stern is a huge Beatles/Macca fan so he knows not to ask the usual tried and true Beatles-related questions that fans have heard the answers to repeatedly over and over again. And thanks to some cool Macca fans, us non-Sirius subscribers are able to listen to the Stern-Macca interview. just download the audio of the interview via megaupload. It may not be up for long so get it while you can. enjoy.

**update 16Jan08**: The interview is now available on youtube. here are the links.

Man, Neil Patrick Harris did a phenomenal job hosting Saturday Night Live. It’s great that he’s finally getting his due for his pitch perfect portrayal of Barney on How I Met Your mother as well as his role in Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. kudos to Seth Myers and the writing staff for providing NPH and the cast some good material to work with this week.

Highlights included -
The Today Show Sketch – an overdue slam on Kathy Lee Gifford. for the love of God, please get that self absorbed has been off the air!

the Broadway Sketch – with Taylor Swift as little orphan Annie!!

and Will Forte singing the BCS Song. – Forte is definitely one of my favorites in the cast right now. the man is comedy gold!
here are the lyrics:
I love stepping in dog crap
And I love it when children get sick
I love paper cuts on my corneas and I love the BCS
I love hanging at the DMV and I love finding out I’m adopted
I love eating tacos filled with uncooked chicken
And I love the BCS
Oh yeah, I love the BCS
It’s the best system ever devised
Neck and neck with the electoral college
And if you’ve got some kind of problem with that
I invite you to s my d
S my d, S my d, S my d
BCS S my d
I love the smell of sick people’s farts
And I love George W Bush
I wish he could be my dad and my lover and I love the BCS
I love thinking about Bush with his shirt off
I love taking off his pants with my mind
He’s the lame duck that I really want to f…..
…fudge
Cause, I love the BCS
Oh yeah, I love the BCS
And my hemorrhoids, I love the BCS
Robert Mugabe, I love the BCS!!!

you can view the video clip of the BCS Song on Hulu.

Also check out the SNL Digital Short from this past saturday. It’s a fun little nod to the Nintendo Wii Music video game and NPH’s previous claim to fame, Doogie Howser MD.

Crazy T-Shirt day

January 10, 2009

In order to boost morale at work, upper management thought implementing a crazy T-shirt day each month would lighten things up a bit. Initially we all thought the idea was pretty lame but after a while the T-shirt thing actually caught on. I’m not sure about everyone else but for me, loud and wacky T-shirts remind me of my college days. Like most college kids, any extra cash would go automatically to food and beer so stylish, designer clothing was definitely out of the question. T-shirts and jeans were pretty much standard issue on our campus. I tended to gravitate toward my musical heroes so I’d wear Paul McCartney, Sting and Todd Rundgren shirts all the time. Rundgren’s 2nd Wind tour shirt featuring “day of the dead” graphics was one of my favorites at the time. The colors were loud and the unique design was a great conversation starter. Sadly my favorite concert shirts shrank in size over the years (or perhaps I just outgrew them?) so I’m not able to wear them anymore. So, I’ve been recently re-building my T-shirt collection through Crazy Dog t-shirts. I can’t simply sit back and let my co-workers have all the fun on “crazy T-shirt day”! Since I’m a big-80’s geek, I’ve acquired some cool retro-tees.

Check ‘em out — geeky references to my childhood loves, Nintendo and classic games like Asteroids. The shirts always put a smile on my face. And yes, fun shirts like these really do lighten things up a bit at work. The Crazy Dog website is currently holding an after-holidays sale with shipping costing only $4 so stock up on some great T-shirts today!

I'm back!

January 8, 2009

apparently an overnight billing system glitch caused hundreds of webhosting accounts (including mine) to be shut down. The glitch caused the system to view our accounts as delinquent and in turn, automatically switched our websites off. I’ve been trying to contact my web hosting provider all day but since they’re located in Australia and I’m in the eastern U.S., it’s impossible getting a hold of someone there during EST business hours since it’s night time on their side of the world. So, just in case any of you were wondering, that’s why the site was down today. Everything has been sorted out, I think. The support team is still investigating why the billing glitch occurred in the first place.

R.I.P. Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)

January 7, 2009

It’s a sad day for gamers today. Ziff Davis is shutting down the long running video game magazine EGM (Electronic Gaming Monthly). We all know the print industry has been hit hard over the years but EGM is (was) a *giant* among gamers, video game enthusiasts as well as in the game industry itself. I’ve been a subscriber for years so the news is pretty shocking. I suppose all this was inevitable since the latest news and game reviews can easily be accessed online but there just something to be said about receiving a well written print magazine in the mail and browsing through the pages each and every month. ..it’s a sad day…
The magazine as well as its talented staff will be missed.
