Yes/Asia 2009 summer tour setlist

Well, it appears that Yes’ summer tour (with Asia) kicked off this past weekend without a hitch. Hopefully the tour will be successfully enough for them to book dates beyond the Pennsylvania date on August 2nd. I’m personally hoping the next leg of the tour will make a stop in the southeast region of the U.S. so that I won’t have to commit to a long road trip just to see the show. come on, this middle-aged man can’t handle those long treks out on the road anymore!

*Warning – spoiler alert* – don’t read any further if you don’t want to know the current Yes/Asia tour setlists…

  1. One song from 90215? That stinks!

  2. 90125 was made by the “Other Yes”, the one with Trevor Rabin…

Only Squire of this Yes Tour was on that album…

  3. Luc, don’t forget Alan White. he was there as well.

  4. A friend of mine caught Yes in San Francisco last weekend. He said they really blew his socks off, and that’s saying a lot from a guy who has been seeing them play live for 25 years. So, for all you Yes Fans out there, both young and old, please go out and support the band. Jon Anderson might be back in 2010, and they might even have a new album in 2010, so let’s keep the Yes flame lit.

  5. Yesworld just announced new UK dates for YES in November!!!

    16/11/2009 Symphony Hall, Birmingham
    17/11/2009 HMV Apollo Hammersmith, London
    19/11/2009 Usher Hall, Edinburgh
    20/11/2009 Newcastle City Hall, Newcastle
    22/11/2009 Apollo, Manchester
    23/11/2009 Colston Hall, Bristol

  6. Weak setlist. Wish I had not bought tickets.

  7. Really looking forward to seeing Asia for the first time ever… my earliest ‘favorite’ band who disbanded way too soon. I wish the set list was longer – it’s missing Time and Time Again, Here Comes the Feeling and Days Like These – to say the least – but still, can’t wait to see John Wetton and Carl Palmer, Steve Howe and Geoff Downes. I don’t care who killed the radio star or who the crimson king was or common man are! I want to hear Asia do Asia! My two cents…

  8. Obone,

It is a shame that Yes dropped Parallels from the set list, but there’s always the chance they will bring it back. I heard Siberian Khatru, Astral Traveller and Machine Messiah were particularily good at the SF show. Steve Howe carries the show. I also heard In The Court and Fanfare were quite good as well during the Asia set. Asia should have left their lullaby songs in the past and rocked out on this tour. The fans that are showing up for these shows want to see them jam, not some ballad from the 1980s. Asia really went down hill over the years. Their most successful album (1st) was also their most rocking album. Too bad they didn’t take a cue from that success.

  9. I saw the show last night in Denver and it was fantastic. Both bands were really tight musically. Only disppointment was not hearing Changes or Long Distance Runaround from Yes. If you are a fan of classic Yes, this set list should blow you away. Steve Howe and Carl Palmer steal the show.

  10. OooooOOOOOO! Just left Dallas (Fort Worth) show. Everything said above, especially the Keith post, is spot on (except the two that complained about the set choices above, IMO). I may be wrong about one or two but essentially the set list atop was exactly what both shows did, in exact order. Possibly Clap was omitted or was when I went to restroom.

I was surprised how rewarding Asia was. I felt I had ALREADY got my money’s worth from that segment alone! Everything was so fine in both shows, that what selections could they have tossed? I didn’t even mind not getting Yours Is No Disgrace.

  11. I might add that if you closed your eyes during Fanfare, you might feel you’re getting a mini ELP concert too!

  12. Just got my tickets for Philadelphia/Upper Darby at The Tower on 7/28/09. Saw them there before and LOVED THE SHOW! Thanks for all of the Great feedback and the set list. See you all at the show.

  13. I’m kind of disappointed not to see Close to the Edge, Yours Is No Disgrace or Perpetual Change on their playlist

  14. Just seen the show last night in Detroit (a/k/a DTE Energy Theater, a/k/a Pine Knob. A little leary at first then Carl Palmer’s (Asia) drum solo blew me away, For a minute a thought I was at an ELP show.

“Yes” just ROCKED THE HOUSE”!!!!! Steve Howe is an amazing guitar player…

The show is well worth seeing….

  15. great to hear that you enjoyed the show!!

  16. I think it was OBONE who said the “set list” was weak? Is he kidding? I’ve seen both of these bands in the past year – and they BOTH were great. Both bands can play an hour more easily. Especially, and obviously, YES.

For ASIA, I enjoy the Buggles, King Crimson and ELP stuff and would it kill them to do a UK song? For those of you who follow John Wetton – and his short but amazing stint with UK – there’s a band I would have LOVED to see in their hey day.

As for YES, you can’t have it all. Yeah, I love “Close To The Edge” too, but how can you complain with “Tempus Fugit”? DRAMA is the most underrated YES album ever (no offense to Jon Anderson). I’ll take “Heart of The Sunrise” ANYTIME. That song alone is worth the price of admission.

  17. Going tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. Drove down from Boston to Long Island to see them on Friday Night. Ive seen Yes over twenty times and Asia a couple of times. This show rocked! I really wasn’t sure what to expect without Anderson there, but Benoit David did an amazing job! I thought it was cool that Asia honored the roots of the members with the Buggles, ELP, & Crimson songs. I’m surprised that these tunes weren’t received well here. Where else would you ever get to see these performed live by musicians of this calibre? King Crimson hasn’t toured in a few years and I’ve heard no talk of Buggles or ELP reunions.

The Yes set…. Can’t play em’ all. I don’t think Astral traveller has been done live in a long, long time. This was a great show! I got to meet the guys after the show (meet & greet package), I’ve met them before with the exception of Benoit & Oliver. I will say that Benoit comes off as a regular guy, very friendly and approachable and Oliver seems a bit shy but is very nice as well.

  19. It was great to see Yes and Asia at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia. I’m a hard core Yes fan, so I was really delighted with their set list, as it contained songs that Yes haven’t done over and over again in concert. I’ve always thought “Astral Traveller” was one of their best early songs, so it was a thrill to hear that one. And the two selections from Drama, “Machine Messiah” and “Tempus Fugit”, are two of my favorite Yes songs. I’ve waited 28 years to hear those songs in concert, and I mean it, I really wanted Yes to play those songs over the years each time I’ve seen ‘em. And they didn’t, because of a certain non-flexible singer; but armed with a new vocalist, this time they did play those songs! Yay!!! I thought Benoit David handled the vocals superbly, and he handled the acoustic guitar part on Machine Messiah (where the music becomes all quiet and unsettlingly mysterious) with aplomb. Truly a great Yes performance (even if Wakeman2 did seriously goof up once on Heart of the Sunrise.) Oh, and as I was unfamililar with Asia’s material, but have always enjoyed ELP and Crimson (and even the Buggles), it was great to hear Asia play the three cover tunes! [One paranthetical note. Rock audiences can be so darn rude. During the quiet flute section of "In the Court of the Crimson King", for example, people all around me were yapping away, laughing, and even shouting at each other to be heard (unnecessarily as it was a quiet section of music.) It was like this throughout much of the entire concert. These rude antics totally interfered with enjoying the music and were disrespectful to the performers, in my opinion. And it's not like we're dealing with a hall full of immature adolescents: these people should have known better! I needed to get that off my chest!]

  20. Anyone going to the Birmingham gig tomorrow night?

  21. Went to see Yes at the Hammersmith Odeon last night and they were great. Took a while to warm up but once they got going (And You And I was awsome)they were superb. I’ve been to a few good gigs this year and this was up their with the best of them. I found out a few days before that Jon wasnt on this tour and have to admit I was dissapointed and probably wouldnt have boutht the tickets had I known. Have to say I was really impressed with Benoit David, at times you wouldnt have known Jon wasnt their. Oliver Wakeman was exccelent on keyboards and I’m sure his father is proud. Even if Rick dosent think they should be touring under the name of Yes. Shame Asia arent on the UK leg of the tour but you cant have it all I suppose. First Time I’ve ever seen yes but from what I’ve heard this is the best they have been for quite some time.
