LG Chocolate Touch reviewLG Electronics, in conjunction with IZEA, sent a brand new LG Chocolate Touch for me to try out and review. The timing couldn’t be more perfect since my two year contract for my VX8600 (a clamshell version of the LG Chocolate) just ran out and I’ve been looking for a replacement for it. I’ve experienced nothing but great things with the previous version of the LG Chocolate so I was more than happy to try out the VX8575. This version stays true to the other Chocolate phones with its sleek design and superb music capabilities. The most significant update obviously is the gorgeous 3 inch touch screen.

The very minute I received the new phone in the mail, I went online to activate it on my existing Verizon account. I was a bit surprised to find that I wasn’t allowed to complete the activation over the web. It probably had something to do with this being a review phone and not something that I purchased through my personal account. I’m pretty sure if I had purchased the phone through Verizon, activation would have been a whole lot smoother. Anyway, after speaking with Verizon customer service on my other phone, I was up and running within five minutes.

The touch screen interface took a bit of getting used to but once I became more familiar with dragging my finger across the screen, everything fell into place. I think the technique I had the most difficulty with was pushing items upwards in order to scroll down the screen. The 240 by 400 display is crisp and colorful and the touch screen features haptics vibration feedback which helps when typing on the screen. The other nice feature is the internal accelerometer which will rotate the orientation of the screen depending on how the phone is held in your hands. For instance, when you’re creating a new text message, turn the phone to its side and a full QWERTY keyboard appears on the screen.

And now, on to the music capabilities. First of all, thank you LG for including a 3.5 headphone jack on this phone. This basically means you can use your normal set of headphones to listen to music and not have to purchase an additional item designed with a specific sized jack. The phone has a decent-sized 1 GB of internal memory. And if that’s not enough (and for us music fans, it’s never enough), LG included a microSD slot so that you can add up to 16 GB of additional storage. Another big positive about this phone is that LG/Verizon doesn’t require you to use their software to transfer music files onto the phone. You simply have to hook up the phone with the included USB cable. The trick is to go to the music menu on the phone and hit the “sync” button or else you won’t be able to see the “internal memory” folder via windows explorer. Once the phone is in “sync mode”, you can drag and drop your selections into the music folder. The Chocolate Touch recognizes both MP3 and AAC tracks. Once the mp3s are on the phone, you can create customized playlists or simply listen by genre, album or by artist. I’ve listened to the tracks using both my trusty old Sennheiser headphones and my Shure E3C sound isolating earphones. Honestly, the music on the VX8575 sound as good as on my ipod nano. The music player even features Dolby Mobile for enhanced clarity and simulated surround sound.

LG also includes the ability to play along with your music tracks using the virtual drum and piano interface. It’s a bit of a novelty and it’s not something you would use extensively since the touch screen only allows one-input at any given time. In other words, you can’t play more than one note on the keyboard at a time. And on drums, that’s a bit of a hindrance when you want to recreate those big “Phil Collins” drum solos on the phone!!

LG Chocolate Touch - play along on drums!

Another nice added feature is the FM tuner. The radio definitely comes in handy when I want to listen to the news while out on my walks. Oh and don’t worry about missing any calls, even while listening to the radio or the mp3 player, the phone will automatically pause the music and let the call come through.

And thank goodness the LG Chocolate Touch isn’t that restrictive with ringtones. Most wireless companies try to lockdown their phones to try and force their consumers to only purchase ringtones through them. But with this LG phone, all you have to do is transfer your favorites mp3s into the “my ringtones” folder on the microSD card. I simply customized 30-sec snippets of my favorite songs on an audio editor like audacity and then used a SD card reader to transfer the files to phone’s microSD card. When you re-insert the card, the phone automatically recognizes the new ringtones in the folder. sweet! I absolutely love this phone.

To sum up – the LG Chocolate Touch is geared toward people like me that don’t necessarily need the power of a smartphone. The VX8575 is sleek and hip and yet very simple to use. Call quality is excellent and the phone has great signal range. And on top of all the solid phone features is the fantastic music player. LG continues to be a top-notched phone manufacturer and the VX8575 is just another great update on an already well-regarded Chocolate brand.

DubNova, Have you tried using the "Tools-USB mass storage" with your data cable? I put a recorded sound in "My Sounds" there and then with options selected it as a ringtone is one way. But note from above, if you SD card is in you can only look on the card, to look in the phone you have to remove the card temporary.

This quote is the only information you need !!!

I just got the chocolate touch today, I put my micro SD card in but am unable to see the pictures that are on it. When I go in to my pictures, the only ones that show up are the defaults that came with the phone.. If anyone could help me figure this out I'd really apppreciate it! Thanks.

Linda,

are you putting the phone in "sync mode" when you're transferring the files via USB? that's the only thing I can think of that would prevent you from dragging and dropping.

Hi,

No matter what I do, I can not drag my MP3 files onto my LG Chocolate Touch. I have an SD card in there, it is synced up and ready to go, however when I try to drag into the "External Memory" in Windows Explorer...nothing happens. I have also tried syncing through Windows Media player...and no luck also.

Help!

good tip Bryan. pulling out the SD card and checking to see if you can see the ringtones folder on the phone's memory is a quick and easy way to see if the SD card is corrupted.

I tried that. Thanks anyway. Guess I'll being calling LG.
Other than that I agree with your review completely. This is a great phone.

I'm not sure, it's usually pretty simple to add ringtones on this phone.

sounds like you might need to reformat your microSD card. I think there's a "format" option under the phone's settings menu.

I'm just not getting this. Help!

I have no problem transferring music from any platform, just drag and drop to the music folder. But there is no ringtones folder for me to drop into with Vcast, WMP, or just folder view. I added a ringtones folder, and can see in the used storage space that the information is on my card. But I cannot access it through any folder on the phone.

My brain hurts. What am I missing?

tbr, I actually mentioned this previously in an earlier comment up above. the microSD slot is hidden behind the back cover.

where does the sd card go, chocolate touch phone

I've seen a lot of folks talk about bitpim but personally, I'll refrain from using it b/c of the warranty issue.

On the BitPim web site http://www.bitpim.org/ it says it has a download for MacOS X 10.3+ (Universal) it might be compatible, you have to check out the site. NOTE!!! the site says quote "There are no warranties as stated above (ie this software may damage your phone)." so weigh the risks and contact the developers for more questions.

Nice info from this article. Thanks! But do you know a way to place my music from my Mac onto this phone? Including drivers/ect...

I connect with a PC. I'm not sure about a Mac. From what I remember reading about the issue, I don't believe there's a proper way to connect the Touch with a Mac. But I could be wrong about that.

There is a download program that has more power, the site is http://www.bitpim.org/ they have LG phones but not this model yet, I have used it on my older (Motorola)phones to look at all the files but other people have said that there is a small risk you could make your phone inoperatable, hence to use of older phones, there isn't enough justification to risk trashing my new phone.

Thanks, was having difficulty figuring out how to get music on my phone! YAY, I now have a ton of music!!!! :)

I loved that I was able to use windows explorer to drag and drop files onto the phone's internal memory, so I purchased a micro SD card to have additional memory. Now when I use windows explorer I can view the external memory on the micro SD card, but I can't see the internal phone memory anymore. Is there a way to see both the phone's internal memory and the external micro SD card at the same time or to switch between the two views? The only way I have figured out is to actually take out the micro SD card, which is a hassle?

Edit on previous post 229mb. My bad.

cool Bryan! Thanks for the update on converting DVDs. That is good to know!

I was able to get a DVD movie to load and play, using DVDfab I was able to convert DVD to cell phone on LG set up res at 320x174 then USB sync to drag and drop in "MyFlix". Took me some time to figure out because of the convert time involved, @ 2 1/2 hrs per movie on my slow laptop file size about 23mb for one movie. Not sure on battery life for playing movies, I'll have to test that next.

The Alltel version doesn't let you play custom ringtones.
You can add them but it won't set them. It only allows downloaded DRM files. I've been ripped off, especially since the manual says you can add your own ringtones.

I found that Rhapsody had trouble transfering photos but music does well, with driver installed, USB connect in tools and you can use windows explorer to drag and drop photos, I'm going to work on video next to see if it will play a full length movie.

hey Tracy, you probably expected the slot to be on the side of the phone. it's actually hidden behind the back cover. just remove the back cover and you should be able to find it above where the battery is.

Where do you put the MicroSD card, I cannot find a slot for it!!!

dude, I was getting a bit frustrated with getting songs onto the Verizon Chocolate Touch until I came across your review. thanks for the tips. I especially like the fact that I can now set up my own mp3s as ringtones. man, my previous verizon phone was a pain in terms of ringtones - i.e. creating the correct mp3 in the right format and bitrate whatever. my new chocolate touch accepts all kinds of mp3s for ringtones. its da bomb.

thanks for the info about transferring the mp3 files from the computer. I didn't realize you have to be in SYNC mode to transfer files.
