Boost Mobile upgrades texting platform on iDEN network

April 27, 2010
Tags:

with all the emphasis on CDMA phones on the Boost Mobile network lately, I’m glad to hear something/anything about the iDEN side of things. Especially since I’m an iDEN subscriber myself! According to a recent posting on Boost’s facebook page, Boost/Sprint finally got around to upgrading their text messaging system to help resolve issues users had with texting. You may remember problems of delayed or lost text messages for those on Boost Mobile last year. The issues stemmed from the old iDEN network not being equipped to handle the massive influx of new subscribers wanting to take advantage of the $50 unlimited plan. Oh, and apparently iDEN wasn’t originally designed for things other than voice transmissions. Anyway, the Boost rep on facebook reassures us that we should no longer be seeing any delays/issues with texting.

here’s what was posted on FB:

Well folks, a few of you were waiting on some official answers into what we’ve been doing to enhance iDEN network texting. Here it is, hot off the press:

Since we launched Monthly Unlimited on our iDEN (walkie-talkie phones) network last year, our text messaging volume has grown by immensely massive levels. Text messaging performance was impacted, and we’ve been working extremely hard since then to improve the experience for our users on that network.

Last month, we completed the last major migration of all Boost iDEN messaging traffic onto an entirely new messaging platform/system. A large amount of resources were dedicated to this important task, as the customer experience is the main priority for our company. Since then, iDEN messaging, according to our nationwide monitoring, has never been better due to our massive efforts. In short: All iDEN network customers should have seen significant improvement in text messaging over the last few weeks!…

So yes, as of a few weeks ago, almost all iDEN users have been moved onto an expensive new texting platform. You should see improvments at this point!

Concord to reissue entire McCartney back catalog on CD and mp3

April 21, 2010

Concord Music Group just announced that they’ve acquired the rights to Paul McCartney‘s back catalog. As a long time McCartney fan, I’m a bit worried about the upcoming reissues. Sir Macca’s extensive catalog has been neglected over the years and is in need of some TLC. EMI totally botched the 1993 remastered series by “no-noising” the heck out of the recordings. Yes, the bonus tracks included on the 1993 CDs were nice but the lifeless and dull sounding reissues left fans scrambling to find the original CBS/Columbia CDs which weren’t perfect but on the whole, sounded better than those dreaded EMI/Capitol remasters.

Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s great that McCartney’s post Beatles solo work will get some much needed attention. But I’m hoping Concord will mirror what was done for the Beatles catalog. A tremendous amount of time and effort was put into the Beatles remastering project and the resulting CDs are miles beyond the original 1987 CDs. Maybe realistically they won’t have the resources to replicate what was done for The Beatles reissues but the least that Concord can do is to make sure the remasters aren’t “loud and brickwalled” which marred Concord’s 2007 McCartney release, Memory Almost Full. Talk about an “ear-bleeder”. yikes.

Most Macca fans feel the benchmark in terms of sound quality are the DCC reissues expertly handled by Steve Hoffman (which included the albums McCartney, Ram, Band on the Run, Red Rose Speedway, Venus and Mars and Wings at the Speed of Sound). Hopefully someone at Concord will take note of how those were done.

And while Concord is at it, why not finally release a box set of Macca rarities?? Now that’s what fans are really waiting for!

Here’s the official press release:

McCartney Catalog To Be Reissued By Concord Music Group

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – Paul McCartney’s MPL and Concord Music Group, one of the world’s leading independent music companies today announced an historic agreement to globally market and distribute McCartney’s venerated solo and Wings catalog, which encompass 40 years of cherished, classic material from the most successful songwriter and recording artist in music history. Indeed, the music legend has sold an astonishing 100 million solo singles and 700 million albums world-wide in his unparalleled career. The announcement coincides with the 40th anniversary of McCartney, his fabled first solo album released April, 1970.

This exclusive global arrangement, will cover both physical and digital distribution of McCartney’s treasured post Beatles catalog including landmark solo albums such as McCartney, Ram, McCartney II, Tug Of War, Pipes of Peace, Give My Regards To Broad Street, Press To Play, Flowers in the Dirt, Off the Ground, Flaming Pie, Driving Rain, Chaos and Creation in the Backyard, Memory Almost Full, and Good Evening New York City. The classic Wings albums include Wildlife, Red Rose Speedway, Band On The Run, Venus and Mars, Wings At The Speed of Sound, Wings Over America, London Town and Back To The Egg. The catalog also includes the inventive, highly regarded albums recorded under the McCartney pseudonyms Percy “Thrills” Thrillington, The Fireman and Twin Freaks.

The indispensible and remarkably enduring collection of songs represented in McCartney’s post 1970 collected works include the gems “Maybe I’m Amazed”, “Another Day”, “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey”, “My Love”, “Live & Let Die”, “Band On The Run”, “Jet”, “Listen To What The Man Said”, “Silly Love Songs”, “Let ‘Em In”, “With A Little Luck”, “Mull Of Kintyre”, “Coming Up”, “Ebony and Ivory”, “Say Say Say”, “No More Lonely Nights”, “My Brave Face”, “Hope Of Deliverance”, “Fine Line”, and “Dance Tonight” among many others.

McCartney fans can look forward to an ambitious and rewarding reissue program beginning in August of 2010 with Band On The Run; Paul McCartney & Wings’ classic #1 album from 1973 that spawned the immortal title song as well as the smash hit “Jet”. It will be available in a variety of configurations, including a special collector’s multi-disc edition with remastered audio, enhanced packaging and rare bonus content.

In 2007 Concord Records and Starbucks partnered to form Hear Music whose inaugural release was Paul McCartney’s highly successful, critically acclaimed album Memory Almost Full. The McCartney-Concord relationship has since blossomed to include the 2009 release of McCartney’s historic multi-disc live CD/DVD Good Evening New York City and now this landmark multi-year global marketing and distribution partnership.

“Since the release of Memory Almost Full in 2007 I have had a good working relationship with Concord and enjoyed our mutual love of music,” stated McCartney. “I’m looking forward to continuing this relationship with the new catalog campaign. I’m always looking for new ways and opportunities to get my music to people and Concord share this passion.”

“Working with Paul McCartney, the MPL team and this tremendous catalog is an unbelievable honor,” stated Glen Barros, Concord Music Group President and CEO. “To so many of us here at Concord and to millions of people all over the world, Paul’s music has formed a big part of ‘life’s soundtrack’. So to now be a part of representing this amazing body of work is nothing short of a dream come true.”

Come on VH1 – how about bringing back the music for a change

April 20, 2010

VH1 recently announced their lineup of upcoming shows slated for their cable network this summer. It’s good to hear that they’ll be continuing the “Behind the Music” and “Storytellers” series. And THANK YOU VH1 for pulling the plug on “Rock of Love” and the assorted spin offs. Good lord, who has been watching that trash anyway?? It’s safe to say that WE the VIEWERS are all tired of the trashy reality shows on VH1.

I totally understand that it is expensive getting clearance to broadcast music on the network but come on, VH1, can’t you find something other than reality shows for the network???

I mean really? “You’re Cut Off” – a rehab show with nine spoiled party girls???

and this – “Money Hungry” – a mashup of a weight loss contest and their other show “I Love Money”???

Sorry, I don’t see any of this increasing your viewership, VH1. sad, sad, sad.

Yes – Madison Square Garden – 1994 – NYC – Talk tour

April 19, 2010
Tags: ,

The neat thing about Yes‘ 1994 Talk Tour was the implementation of “ConcertSonics” at all their U.S. shows. ConcertSonics was an experimental way to transmit the audio mix for the live audience to listen to simply by using their own personal FM receiver and headphones. Ultimately the technology didn’t catch on primarily due to the fact that the actual live sound in the venue overpowered any audio coming from the lil’ headphones. BUT it was an absolute boon for tapers!! Just attach a recorder of some kind to the FM receiver and voila, easy access/recording of a FM quality feed of the soundboard mix of the show. So as you can imagine, the whole U.S. tour was well documented with boots and fan-made tapes of practically every show.

One of my favorite recordings from this tour is the 9/10/94 show at Madison Square Garden in New York City. I’m not sure if it was due to it being in New York or because it was the last U.S. date of the Talk Tour or a bit of both but the band was tight and firing on all cylinders. You can definitely hear the difference in the performance when you compare it to one of the shows at the start of the tour (… but I guess you can say that about pretty much any tour. heh.) Anyway, Trevor Rabin particularly seems to be at his “A” game here. Amazing guitar solos throughout especially on the epic song “Endless Dream”. Yes, Rabin gets a bit self-indulgent with his needless piano solo before “And You and I” but he’s truly mindblowing on guitar.

As for the recording, it’s “FM radio quality” with a bit of static reception at a couple points around the beginning of the recording but still very good overall. Also the audio is heavily limited/compressed just like a radio broadcast so a lot of the big dynamics are missing. In other words, the drum sounds are “squashed” and Chris Squire’s bass isn’t deep and low like it should. But that’s just the audiophile in me talking. In any case, this boot is still a favorite in my collection.

The Bird and The Bee – Heard it On the Radio

April 9, 2010
Tags:

The Bird and The Bee‘s new album Interpreting the Masters Vol. 1: A Tribute to Daryl Hall and John Oates is a bit of a disappointment. I was hoping for more “interpretation” but for the most part these Hall and Oates covers are pretty pedestrian. Yes, it’s fun to hear Inara George singing “Maneater” and “I Can’t Go for That” but the novelty wears off pretty quickly after a couple listens. The highlight of the album isn’t a Hall and Oates song but actually their sole original track titled “Heard it On the Radio”. The song is tuneful and breezy and perfect for when you’re out and about on a warm, sunny day.

So for today’s RetroBlog – Song of the Day, here’s Heard it On the Radio.

When we first met it wasn’t what you said
And still I loved you like mad, I loved you like mad

When we first met, they were playing that song
And then it stuck into my head, stuck into my head

When we first kissed you made it to my list
And then I couldn’t stop myself, think of nothing else

When we parked the car they were playing that song
And then we turned it up to ten and started up again

Now every time I hear it playing I think of you
And those summer days
Oh, I can still remember when I heard it on the radio
Oh, but now we are September, come on, forget what we know

When you broke my heart there was nothing you could say
And still I loved you like mad, I loved you like mad
Now, when I think back it wasn’t what we had
They were just playing that song made it last so long

Now every time I hear it playing I think of you
And those summer days
Oh, I can still remember when I heard it on the radio
Oh, but now we are September, come on, forget what we know

Date Night Opens this friday – Steve Carell – Tina Fey

April 7, 2010

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of 20th Century Fox. All opinions are 100% mine.

The highly anticipated comedy “Date Night” opens this friday, April 9th. Two of the biggest stars of must-see comedy thursday pair up in what looks to be this spring’s bona fide big-screen smash. Steve Carell and Tina Fey portray your typical suburban married couple deeply entrenched in the day to day routine. They impulsively take another couple’s table reservation at a trendy restaurant one night and that’s when their troubles begin. They’re mistaken to be the ones who stole some information from a mobster and are then chased after by some no-good henchmen.

I’m a huge fan of both Carell and Fey and it’s great to see them work together in this project. There’s some good buzz surrounding the flick and early reviews say the pair have great chemistry together. The neat thing that I’ve heard about the movie is that it has a positive take on the couple’s marriage. Yes, the couple is in a rut and may appear bored with their lives but screenwriter Josh Klausner made it a point to show their marriage in a good light. In fact, he has been quoted in saying that the movie is “a love letter to marriage.” With so many crude and obnoxious comedies topping the box office, it’s actually refreshing that “Date Night” has some heart to it.

The Date Night Movie was helmed by director Shawn Levy who has had a string of hit movies including “Night at the Museum” and “Cheaper by the Dozen”. The movie also features a great supporting cast including Ray Liotta, James Franco and Mila Kunis. It opens this weekend so be sure to grab your spouse and make it a date night. I know I will!

Todd Rundgren’s Johnson Webcast 2010 – PPV – Ridgefield CT

April 7, 2010

Todd Rundgren recently announced that a PPV webcast will be available for the April 11th Ridgefield Playhouse gig. Since Rundgren’s current TR’s Johnson tour is primarily taking place on the eastern half of the U.S., it’s apparent that he wants to offer a chance for ALL of his fans to see the show.

The webcast is being done by the same production crew that did the previous AWATS PPVs back in September so we’re in good hands here. I enjoyed watching the Chicago AWATS shows via webcast so I’m definitely purchasing the April 11th video stream.

the $24.95 webcast ticket can be purchased via the TodoCast.tv website. They’re offering both 400k and 800k quality streams. in addition to the live simulcast, the video of the whole concert will be available for viewing anytime after the event for approximately one month.
